In climates with abundant precipitation, rain water management becomes a priority within building codes across the construction industry. When it comes to siding installations, the most notable difference in these climates is the use of a rainscreen system behind the siding material.
Rainscreen, also referred to as the preparation phase, consists of weather barrier membranes, flashing and, in most cases, vertically installed wooden strips on which the siding products will be fastened.
These furring strips create a gap of at least 10mm between the siding and the home’s sheathing that allows any moisture that gets passed the cladding to drain down and away from the wall.
This capillary action ensures that any areas behind your siding are constantly ventilated and kept dry, which in turn eliminates the possibility of encountering mildew and rot issues in the future.
Rainscreen is the last line of defense preventing moisture from accessing the interior of your home, that being said, it is of paramount importance that it be installed correctly.
Please be sure to consult with a building envelope professional prior to taking on the installation of rainscreen on your own home.
The Rainscreen System consists of multiple products working together to, not only prevent water from reaching the inner areas of your home’s framing but, more importantly, ensure that moisture is able to easily escape from areas hidden behind the siding system.
In most cases, a combination of wood strips, building membranes and metal flashing creates an effective rainscreen system, but the vast majority of homes have many ventilation ducts, wires and plumbing that extend from interior spaces and past the exterior walls. These are called “Penetrations” and require additional flashing work and special self-adhering membranes in order to maintain the building envelopes impermeability.
There are many different systems available on the market and each one can be customized to meet your specific project requirements. When working on concrete or steel framed buildings, for example, installing wood strips often becomes an unfeasible task and alternative products are used instead.
Steel, Aluminum, PVC and Fibre Cement, each offering their own advantages, can be installed in lieu of wood furring strips. With so many different materials on products on the market, selecting the right one for your project can become overwhelming but Orbis Group is here to help!
Please feel free to reach out to our building envelope specialists to discuss the specifics of your project and obtain a free quotation for your rainscreen installation.
Rainscreen does not often require major repairs as its main purpose is to effectively divert water behind your siding system. However, deterioration of wood products or incidental damage to flashing can happen over time and repairs may been needed.
Repairing your rainscreen system can be as easy as removing a few screws to replace a single element, but in some cases, removing entire sections of siding to gain access to the damaged areas can be necessary.
Incorrectly removing components from your rainscreen system can lead to more costly repairs in the end which is why we always suggest consulting with a professional before attempting a rainscreen repair.
Exterior insulation is becoming more and more popular on new construction projects. Including a layer of insulation on the exterior walls of your home in addition to the standard interior insulation has been found to yield substantial results in temperature management and energy efficiency.
Exterior insulation, often made from Mineral Wool or XPS foam, is available in a variety of thicknesses to meet the requirements of each specific project and is typically installed over the building paper and underneath wood furring strips.
While the insulation requirements are often determined by architects and building engineers, our team of cladding and rainscreen specialists are always available to answer any questions you may have.
If you would like to include exterior insulation behind your new cladding system, whether new construction or renovation, we are happy to work with you in order to find the right product for your project.
Rainscreen Systems are required across the construction industry in British Columbia, from single family homes to massive industrial projects.
The systems used in commercial, industrial and multi family construction can be very different from what is seen on standard home build.
Depending on the business, building location and type of construction, the rainscreen system required can vary greatly. With the availability of systems offering protection against fires, thermal transfer and long-term exposure to extreme humidity, the commercial and industrial construction industries demand highly specialized systems to meet the requirements of each project.
Every rainscreen system is installed using its own components and materials that are chosen to meet the needs of each specific project. Therefore, the final material and labour pricing can vary greatly from one installation to the next.
When it comes to average pricing for a single-family home while basing ourselves on the most common rainscreen systems for this type of project, you should budget between $___ and $___ per square foot of exterior wall area. This price includes the supply and installation of all materials needed to ensure the impermeability of your building envelope as well as any administrative support required along the way; from the initial planning phase up to the completion of your rainscreen’s installation, you will not have to worry about any unexpected costs.
We ordered siding and windows along with the installation from this company. Manager Tom came to estimate the house. Estimation was free. He counted everything and suggested which materials would be better with best quality. He also talked about the timing, progress of work and stages. All materials were brought free of charge, the entire territory was cleaned and covered with special tents so as not to spoil my garden and lawn, as well as the adjacent territory. The installation scheme was not typical and was proposed by the project manager as the optimal solution for our house design. Tom's team worked well, very efficiently maintaining an average pace and completed all the work in accordance with the established requirements. The working conditions were not satisfactory due to bad weather conditions, but despite this, the quality did not suffer. I was convinced of this once again when my relative (a professional builder) came to visit me from Manitoba and confirmed it. The experience of the construction crew is visible to the naked eye. The team is 100% completed in special equipment and tooling, I liked it. There were times when I asked builders about the tools they use. They showed me and said that all one kit they use costs at least $ 15,000. I noticed Hilti, Makita and other brands, which are very expensive. All the pitfalls were discussed during the construction activities in advance and did not baffle me. Based on the results of the work performed, I can evaluate the construction and installation team and the manager's project for an assessment of "5+". At the end of the construction activities, the area around the house was cleaned up, the remaining materials were disposed of according to the rules. In general, we were satisfied with the work, the price was not to say that it was expensive, but also not cheap. I believe that the entire budget spent on facing our house is fully justified. In confirmation of this, my friend, a realtor, told me that after the renovation, my house grew in price by 78% of the funds spent on the cladding, so I am very pleased, as most likely I will sell it in the near future. Project manager and respectable builders are very good. I and my wife would like to thank this company for the work done on time and for the attitude towards the client.

We had all the siding on our house replaced by Orbis. The only hang-up was a delay in the custom painting of the Hardie, which took a little longer than expected. But it was definitely worth the wait! Tom, our sales rep, was outstanding and very responsive. He was up front about pricing and extremely thorough. Jeremy and his crew did an exceptional job with the install. They were respectful, maintained a clean site, and detailed. I would absolutely recommend Orbis to anyone out there looking for exterior home improvements!
